Youth Program Information

The LULAC Youth program is devoted to providing leadership education and training opportunities to Hispanic youth. Like the adult organization, the Youth program is centered on issues that directly impact the Hispanic community. The Youth program develops young people by fostering improved opportunities for involvement in the areas of public service, education, and culture and in the civic arena, such as city and state government. It encourages young people to get involved at an early age and begin developing high moral and ethical standards, as well as, a strong sense of civic responsibility

The purpose of the Youth program is to begin instilling leadership concepts as part of a lifelong learning process. Youth councils bring together Hispanic youth, adult sponsors, community leaders and local educators to discuss leadership characteristics, skills and activities. The youth council meetings are designed to transition and prepare young people to work as a team and learn how to meet effectively to pursue a goal. At these council meetings, Hispanic youth begin to learn parliamentary procedure, develop leadership traits, learn how to work in groups and form a consensus; they begin to adopt general skills that will enable them to provide leadership roles in future projects or programs that benefit their community.

LULAC Youth interact with existing community leaders and learn the value of networking with others who have similar concerns and beliefs. In addition, the Youth program allows young people to explore their personal leadership style and inform themselves on issues that impact their local Hispanic community.

A LULAC Youth Council is an affiliated unit of the League that is comprised of volunteer youth members who work within a community under the authority of a charter granted by the LULAC National Youth Board of Directors. LULAC Youth councils can be official sanctioned organizations within area high schools or operate and meet independently. Currently, the LULAC Youth is the largest network of Hispanic youth councils organized in the United States.
